Global Warming - Common Sense Approach

I wrote this article to address the concept of global warming from a common sense approach. I realize that many, many, people, will indicate that I have no experience in any area of science, and they would be correct. I have been a computer programmer for over 35 years, which indicates some form of logical capability on, at least, an elementary level.

The first item that I would like to address is Al Gore's following. I realize that he is a well known individual, and a former Vice President of our great Country. I believe that the opinions he does have, he truly believes to be factual. That being said, he, himself, has made a very profitable living, projecting the information that he has compiled from scientists who have been paid to produce information that could substantiate the global warming claims.

In May of last year 31,478 scientists, in the United States alone, signed a petition stating that "There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate.Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth." This petition information comes from

In any case, the extensive debate will continue to rage on, much like the debate on the abortion issue, Darwin's theory of evolution, big government versus small government, capitalism versus socialism, as well as all of the various religions accross the globe. The point that I have a problem with, is when we teach our children, and state something as fact, when it is not fact, but conjecture. So, I would like to indicate the items that are utilized to determine the case for global warming, and interject some common sense to what I consider the hysteria concerning our amazing planet.

The first item is the basic premiss that the temperature of the earth has raised over 7 tenth's of a degree in the last 100 years. I know for a fact that devices that were able to measure even 1 degree in Celcius accurately, did not appear until the 1950's. These devices were used in a closed environment. The devices that are used today to determine an accurate temperature in the open atmosphere, did not come out until very recent years. Before that, a standard thermometer was used. We all know that the recorded readings that have been made over the last 100 years could not be represented by a tenth of a degree. It is common sense to think that someone looking at a high and low tempature from 1930, could not obtain exact measurements. Who knows, maybe the person who recorded the information, took his lunch break at the hottest time of the day, and recorded a high, and/or a low temperature that was not really the high or low temperature of that day. Some scientists will say that they use extremely scientific methods to find out what a temperature was in the past, but I know that Meteorologists are frequently wrong, and they only forcast up to 5 or 10 days. Am I suppossed to believe a Climatologist who is going to tell me about what the weather is going to do 50 years from now? I don't think so. Maybe it's just me, but common sense should tell you that there was no accurate way of determining the global mean temperature in the early 1900's. There are still some great citizens alive that will tell you that it was pretty darn cold in Germany during World War II, from both sides.

The second item is that industrialization is the cause of global warming, or global cooling. I could write all day regarding the progress of man, and many people would consider me an evil person for believing that living in a nice, warm, or cool, house, being able to transport long distances in comfortable surrounding, going to the store to pick up what I need without having to kill it, or grow it, and oh!, writing this article without having my hand hurting from dunking my feather pen into an ink well, and making sure that it does not rub against the paper before the ink dries. The point is this. All of the chemicals that we use, are now, and have always been, in the atmosphere. To anyone who has any knowledge regarding the cosmos, the gaseous emittions that our planet has produced, and continues to produce, have been pouring into our atmosphere since our great planet was first formed. Everyone has a basic understanding that, at one time, this planet was a firery ball, and eventually, it will be an icy rock. They haven't found, or created, any new elements recently. Some will say that compounds that have been made from those elements are far more dangerous to our atmosphere than the basic elements. Again, this is conjecture only.

The third item is population, not only of man, but of cows and other animals. Give me a break. They talk about CO2 emission and methane gas. First off, those of us who have taken science courses in school, know that CO2 is what plants, trees, vegetables, and even grass, take in. So, again, common sense would tell you that we are providing more of the raw material that these things need. If anything, we are providing a much needed service to both the plant, and wildlife, that exist on our planet. If you consider that a bunch of hogwash, than consider the fact, that again, numerous scientists believe that the CO2 amount in the atmosphere has nothing to do with global warming. You can look it up on the internet, but I suggest you use a search engine other than Google, for an obvious reason. In regards to methane that cows produce, again, give me a break. Three quarters of this wonderful planet that we call Earth, is covered by water. Any credible scientist will tell you that due to both volcanic activity in our oceans, and tectonic plate movement, 100's of times more methane is released from our oceans naturally, than from any and all releases that occur on land.

The last item that I would like to address, is the polar ice caps melting. This claim has been totally rebutled by the fact that today, the polar ice caps are at the same level as they were in 1979. There are two types of ice formations at, and near, the Earth's poles. One is land ice, and the other is sea ice. Sea ice melts and forms with the change of seasons much more rapidly, then that of land ice. It also represents the formations that we call icebergs. You know, like the one that hit the Titanic. Please check the article on . In any case, the overall hysteria of the polar ice caps completely melting, causing the seas to rise 13 to 20 feet is bull. Do the research. The hysteria that has accompanied the global warming conversation, is unreasonable. The problem is that people listen to, and believe, so much nonsense, simply because they want to believe that mankind is evil. Please understand that the people who are promoting this, have funding considerations. I remember what my mother and father always told me, "Follow the money" and "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear". I have since added power to the "Follow the Money" statement. All I'm saying is that, if you can't trust your local weatherman too much, why would you believe someone that is talking about what will happen in 50 to 100 years, or even 5 years. We might be hit by a massive meteor this year, and none of it will matter. But, at least, take what someone tells you, with a grain of salt, and use your own mind and common sense.

As always, thank you for visiting my web site;
